Vancouver Island University has announced that it will be increasing the English requirement for international students in order to better support students’ academic success. “Our goal is to ensure international students can academically perform in their second language and match their Canadian classmates,” says VIU Professor Matthew Finlayson. “Having the English skillset to understand the material in the coursework is crucial to students’ success, and at VIU we offer the support systems to get them there.” The new requirement will take effect for the September 2019 intake and will require IELTS 6.5 with no bands under 6.0  for undergraduate programs and IELTS 7.0 with no bands under 6.5 for graduate programs.
