The Government of Alberta has invested $3.2M into ten projects focused on smart technologies for the agri-food sector. The funding, which comes from the Alberta Innovates’ Smart Agriculture and Food Digitalization and Automation Challenge, will focus on projects that increase productivity and reduce waste and the eco-footprint of agricultural production. Two postsecondary institutions are among the organizations receiving funding: Lakeland College will receive over $490K for projects focused on sustainability-focused bison farming technologies and a smart device that will predict sheep pregnancy and litter size; and the University of Alberta will receive over $490K for a project that uses machine learning to predict and assess how agriculture impacts soil health in AB.
