Rent depends on your location and living arrangements. Students frequently rent full apartments together to split costs:
- Shared Room / House: $600 to $900+ per month per student.
- 1-Bedroom Apartment: $1,600 to $2,200+ per month.
- 2-Bedroom Apartment: $2,200 to $3,000+ per month (often shared between 2 to 4 students).
📱 Mobile & Data Plans
Canadian mobile connectivity is among the most expensive in the world. Pricing generally falls into two tiers:
- Budget Retailers: Cheap cell phone plans can be found for $55 with tax.
- Major National Carriers: Major retailers with high data plans cost $80 to $100 per month.
🛒 Basic Grocery Basket
Covers basic cooking essentials and household staples. Dining out or using food delivery apps will significantly increase your monthly expenses.
🚌 Transit & Purchases
Monthly transit passes vary depending on the city. Keep in mind that provincial sales taxes (up to 13-15%) are added at the register for most goods and services.
Notice: Avoid the Minimum Wage Trap
Many online sources sugarcoat the student experience by claiming part-time minimum wage jobs easily cover both tuition and full living expenses. In reality, working part-time hours at minimum wage barely covers basic rent and groceries.
Working 20 hours a week in survival jobs can lead to burnout and distract from your studies. ICEC encourages students to focus on career-track co-ops, field internships, or completing distance learning credits from home prior to relocating.
